Growing Forward: A Summer Update from Sunset Sky Farm

As summer gets underway, we wanted to take a moment to share what we’ve been working on here at Sunset Sky Farm. From vineyards and livestock to wine and farmers markets, this season is shaping up to be one of our busiest and most exciting yet.

Investing in the Future of the Farm

This spring, we were honored to receive funding through the New York State Grown & Certified Infrastructure & Technology and the Farm Animal Concern Trust Grant Programs. This grant is helping us invest in equipment and infrastructure that will improve both the sustainability and efficiency of our operation.

Through this grant project, we are undertaking several key improvements designed to strengthen our grazing system, enhance animal welfare, and support long-term farm viability. The grant funded the purchase of a row mower, improvements to perimeter fencing, and virtual collars for our cows, all of which will help us better manage grazing, improve pasture utilization, enhance livestock containment, and support the long-term sustainability of the farm.

One of the biggest projects currently underway is the installation of additional perimeter fencing and improvements to our grazing infrastructure. These upgrades will allow us to manage livestock more effectively while enhancing safety for our animals. Secure fencing, reliable water access, and efficient grazing systems are essential as we continue expanding our regenerative farming practices.

We’ve also been putting our new mowing equipment to work throughout the farm. Managing vegetation in our vineyards and pastures is critical for maintaining healthy soils, improving forage quality, reducing competition from weeds, and creating safer conditions for both livestock and farm operations. While mowing may not be the most glamorous part of farming, it plays a huge role in helping us build resilient, productive systems.

Growing Our Beef Program

Over the past several years, demand for our grass-fed beef has continued to grow. Many of you have told us how much you appreciate knowing where your food comes from and having the opportunity to purchase directly from the farm.

To meet that demand, we are increasing our beef offerings this season. In addition to individual cuts available at our farmers market stands, we continue to offer bulk beef options for families looking to stock their freezers with locally raised meat.

Our cattle are rotationally grazed on pasture as part of our regenerative farming system. By carefully managing grazing and allowing pastures time to recover, we work to improve soil health, support biodiversity, and provide our animals with access to high-quality forage throughout the growing season.  All of our beef is grass fed and grass finished.

Bulk Pork Available This Fall

We’re also excited to announce that we will once again be offering bulk pork this fall. Customers interested in purchasing whole or half hogs should reach out early, as availability is limited and reservations tend to fill quickly.

The Return of Love Child

For those who have been asking us at the farmer’s market, we have some exciting news.

Love Child is back.

One of our original wines and a longtime customer favorite, Love Child holds a special place in the history of Sunset Sky Farm. We’ve received countless requests asking when it might return, and we’re thrilled to finally say that it will be making its comeback this season.

Find Us at the Farmers Markets

We’re excited to reconnect with customers old and new this season.

You can find us on Saturdays at both the Westfield Farmers Market and the Fredonia Farmers Market. We’ll be bringing a variety of products throughout the season, including beef, wine, grape juice, maple syrup, and other farm offerings as they become available.
